Virginia Tech commit Shawn Asbury II made a major announcement recently. That plus a couple notes on a pair of top 2022 regional targets for the Hokies in today's edition of our Virginia Tech football recruiting notes.

3* DB Shawn Asbury II

Shawn Asbury II remains strong in his commitmemnt to Virginia Tech with Asbury not planning on arriving earlier than previously planned.

Asbury became the second player to publicly state his intentions to enroll early, joining three-star CB commit Nykelius Johnson. Having a pair of defensive backs on campus early should be beneficial for a Virginia Tech defense that is prioritizing trying to add young depth to their defensive secondary in this recruiting cycle.

Asbury is an intriguing, versatile prospect who could fit in a variety of roles including as a nickelback or cornerback. Additionally, Asbury has very good speed and agility that could make him a potential punt return candidate for the Hokies at some point during his collegiate career. Getting him on campus early could open those doors to climb into a future punt return role learning behind Tayvion Robinson and push for a kick return job along with other special teams roles.

We will have more later this week on Asbury's decision and his plans to prep for his winter arrival in Blacksburg.

2022 3* TE Nate Kurisky

Three-star TE Nate Kurisky out of Washington D.C. private powerhouse Gonzaga has already emerged as a top tight end target for the Hokies with Tech gaining lots of traction.

Kurisky told us that the Hokies are the current leaders in his recruitment with Maryland and Wake Forest also currently standing out in his recruitment. He credited the fact that he has a "good relationship with the TEs coach (James Shibest)" as the reason why the Hokies currently lead in his recruitment with that relationship strength being due to their regular contact and "good base."

Kurisky is a very intriguing 2022 tight end prospect who has already built up a good base of offers from schools in the ACC, SEC, Big 10, and AAC. That list definitely has the potential to grow given what he's shown to date and the fact that he is at a well-know program where he should be well-coached.

Keep an eye on Nate Kurisky as a top 2022 tight end target that the Hokies are in great shape with early on.

2022 3* OL Ryan Nolan

2022 three-star 757 OL Ryan Nolan has some strong Virginia Tech connections as his cousin is former Hokie Chris Clifton while his father grew up with Hokie Hall of Famer and current assistant Darryl Tapp.

Those connections are paying off as Nolan told us.

Nolan said that the Hokies are "definitely standing near the top" of his recruitment at the moment because he "likes their football and academic program." Nolan has already received 6 offers including one from the Hokies according to 247 Sports with North Carolina being a program who could be next to offer the 757 star out of Deep Creek HS.

The Hokies have a history of landing some great players from Deep Creek HS highlighted by two of Tech's greatest defensive players in program history: DeAngelo Hall and Darryl Tapp. The question is will that tradition expand more on the offensive side with Ryan Nolan?

For now though, the Hokies are in good shape, but it's still early with the 2022 class' Early Signing Day still being almost 1.5 years away.
