Montgomery arrives after being the co-OC for the 2024 UFL champion Birmingham Stallions. Prior to that, Montgomery has extensive FBS experience including as the head coach at Tulsa (2015-22) along with offensive coordinator and co- OC jobs at Houston (2007), Baylor (2008-14), and Auburn (2023). He’s also been the QBs coach at those stops and developed elite quarterbacks that Robert Griffin III, Case Keenum, and Bryce Petty.
In VT’s press release, Brent Pry shared the following comment on Montgomery.
“Philip Montgomery is one of the most respected offensive minds in college football. His ability to develop quarterbacks and build explosive offenses will be instrumental in our continued growth as a program. Philip’s experience as both a head coach and a coordinator will help us maximize our talent and put our players in the best position to succeed,” Brent Pry said.
Montgomery had this to say in VT’s press release about being hired as the Hokies’ new offensive coordinator.
“I’m honored to join Virginia Tech and work alongside Coach Pry and this outstanding staff,” said Montgomery. “The tradition of Hokie football, combined with the passion of its fan base, make this an exciting opportunity. I look forward to implementing an aggressive, balanced offensive attack that puts our players in a position to thrive.”
The Montgomery hire does feel in line in some ways with what his good friend James Franklin has done at Penn State, hiring a respected mind and former head coach to be the head coach of the opposite side of the ball from his background. Franklin has done with his post-Pry DC hires of Manny Diaz, Tom Allen, and Jim Knowles; all of whom had previous head coach experience and were highly-respected defensive minds. Pry has now done the same with Philip Montgomery, the former Tulsa head coach and a respected offensive mind.
