Virginia Tech has made a major splash on the coaching market as the Hokies have hired former West Virginia assistant head coach/OL coach Matt Moore as their new offensive line coach.
Moore had been at West Virginia for the past six seasons during which he had coached three All-Americans in Colton McKivitz (2019), Zach Frazier (2023), and Wyatt Milum (2024) along with several all-conference honorees. Between WVU and Troy, he’s had 17 all-conference offensive linemen since 2015. He’s also had success landing talented linemen via the portal including former Virginia Tech starting guard Doug Nester, most notably.
This was not his first power conference coaching stint as he was also at Texas Tech from 2007-11 which included an 11-2 season for the Red Raiders in 2008. He and Neal Brown were part of the staff at Texas Tech for some of that time period, with Moore coaching under Brown since he got the Troy job back in 2015. He also was the offensive coordinator for Troy in 2018 along with being the co-OC at Troy from 2015-17 and at WVU in 2019, plus the assistant head coach at WVU since 2020.
Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry had this to say about the hire of Moore in VT’s press release.
“I am thrilled to add Matt Moore to our staff,” said Pry. “He brings extensive experience coaching
offensive lines at the Power Four level. His proven ability to develop strong, tough offensive line units that play with exceptional physicality will be a tremendous asset to our program. His leadership and expertise align perfectly with our vision for Virginia Tech football.”
