Virginia Tech left-handed pitcher Madden Clement is entering the transfer portal, according to Josh Poslusny of Virginia Tech on Si.
Clement appeared in 12 games in 2024, posting a 2-1 record and a 6.00 ERA while striking out 23 batters across 21.0 innings. He was at his best in two of his more memorable outings that spring — pitching 2.0 innings and recording four strikeouts against Liberty on April 10, and then delivering his finest performance of the season on May 1 against N.C. A&T, where he struck out seven batters across 5.1 innings.
Clement started his 2025 season off against Bucknell, where he started and delivered 3.1 innings of one-hit ball with 5 strikeouts before he exited with a throwing arm injury. He missed the rest of the season due to that injury. It was a significant setback for a pitcher who had shown promise as a freshman, and it left his development on pause at a critical stage.
He returned to the mound this season and worked his way back into the Hokies' rotation, making eight appearances — five of them starts — and posting a 3.95 ERA across 13.2 innings.
His best stretch came in the middle of the season, including a 3.2-inning outing against James Madison on April 28 that represented his longest appearance of the year, and a clean 2.1-inning effort at Liberty on May 6 in which he did not allow a hit.
The season closed with a difficult outing at UCLA on May 30 in the NCAA Tournament, where he allowed back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, before UCLA walked it off and ended the Hokies season.
For his career at Virginia Tech, Clement finishes with a 2-1 record and a 4.74 ERA across 21 appearances, striking out 41 batters over 38.0 innings pitched. He is the third pitcher and fourth Hokie to enter the portal this offseason, joining left-hander Chase Swift, right-hander Ben Weber and catcher/first baseman Anderson French.
