After beating Pittsburgh 20-14
, Virginia Tech returned to the top 25 in both the AP and Coaches Polls
. With the Hokies returning to the top 25 in those two polls, most expected that VT would also jump back into the College Football Playoff rankings. Unsurprisingly, Virginia Tech did make their return this week.
Virginia Tech returned to the College Football Playoff top 25 ranked 25th. This will be the first time that the Hokies will be ranked by the College Football Playoff rankings going into the Battle for the Commonwealth Cup.
Virginia Tech is one of three ACC teams ranked in this week's College Football Playoff rankings alongside #2 Miami and #3 Clemson. Virginia Tech is the third highest ranked ACC team after their win over Pitt along with NC State's loss to Wake Forest that led to the Wolfpack dropping out of the top 25.
With the Hokies being the highest ranked ACC team not named Clemson and Miami, it does put VT in position to go to the Orange Bowl if both Clemson and Miami make the College Football Playoff as long as they beat Virginia. If UVA pulls off the upset, the Hokies still have a chance to go to the Orange Bowl, but Wake Forest, Louisville, and NC State would all be in the conversation. However, all of this is for nothing if the loser of Clemson-Miami doesn't make the College Football Playoff as most expect.
25th seems like an appropriate ranking for a Virginia Tech team that has an elite defense and really good special teams, but an offense that currently isn't as good as it was just a month ago. The Hokies will have a chance to prove they should be ranked higher against a 6-5 UVA team that was up by 14 twice at #2 Miami last week.
Virginia Tech is back in the top 25 as they deserve, but will have to get the job done against Virginia to stay ranked. If they can, they'll be in the driver's seat to go to the Orange Bowl if Miami and Clemson both make the playoff.
