The Hokies were ranked 24th in the Preseason Coaches Poll as one of four 2020 ACC football members to make the cut. The other three were Clemson at #1, Notre Dame at #10, and North Carolina at #19. Miami, Louisville, Virginia, Pittsburgh, and Duke were the other ACC members to receive votes with Georgia Tech being the lone Coastal team not on any coaches' ballots.
Even with Caleb Farley opting out of this season, it shouldn't be a surprise to see the Hokies in these preseason rankings especially with 9 starters on defense and 8 starters on offense returning for Tech from an 8-5 team. Combine that with quality transfer additions like Justus Reed and Khalil Herbert, and it's easy to see why Tech is ranked in the top 25.
This also gives Tech two top 25 matchups as of these rankings at North Carolina on October 10th and at Clemson on December 5th. Additionally, it's easy to envision games at Louisville and home against Miami potentially becoming top 25 matchups given the upside of those two teams this season.
What these rankings make clear is that after a couple down seasons outside of Clemson, the ACC is back on the rise across the board with loads of talent at several programs including Virginia Tech.
