Black is the sixth Hokie to enter the transfer portal joining starting TE Dae'Quan Wright, starting nickelback Derrick Canteen, RB Bryce Duke, WR Da'Wain Lofton, and OL Johnny Dickson.
During his three seasons at Virginia Tech, Black had 141 rushing yards and three catches for 23 yards on offense while 20.6 yards per kick return on 21 kick returns. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Black received some buzz from Tech's staff during his early time at Virginia Tech, but was never able to climb the depth chart into a significant role. He seemed to fall behind Bryce Duke for the RB3 role this year with Bhayshul Tuten and Malachi Thomas getting all of the first team touches.
Black will likely land at a Group of 5 or FCS program and definitely has some intriguing potential.
With Black following Bryce Duke into the transfer portal, Virginia Tech is down to five scholarship running backs with the lead duo of Bhayshul Tuten and Malachi Thomas plus younger reserves Jeremiah Coney and Tralon Mitchell, and current 2024 commit Tyler Mason.
There has been plenty of hype about Coney who could be more than ready to step into that RB3 role next year, but Tech could also considering adding a younger transfer portal running back like former 757 four-star recruit and UNC RB George Pettaway. Tuten also hasn't made a decision on returning to Virginia Tech or not for 2024 so if he were to move on, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Hokies pursue a RB to pair with Thomas with Duke standout RB Jaquez Moore already receiving a Tech offer.
