Virginia Tech RB Raheem Blackshear Declares For the 2022 NFL Draft

Virginia Tech standout RB Raheem Blackshear announced on Twitter that he is declaring for the 2022 NFL Draft, but will play in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Blackshear heads for the NFL after three seasons at Rutgers followed by two seasons at Virginia Tech. This comes after he had his best collegiate season in 2021 with 711 rushing yards 6 rushing touchdowns, and an average of 5.9 yards per carry while adding 23 catches for 244 yards and 1 touchdown.

After proving to be a capable passing back at Rutgers, Blackshear was vastly underused in that capacity especially in 2020 though Khalil Herbert rightly took on a large role even though Blackshear could've been a strong slot as well. However, Blackshear has shown that he can be a capable scat back/third down back who should get plenty of NFL looks though he may have an uphill battle to get drafted.

Blackshear would have been in his final season regardless if not for the free COVID year rule from last year but like numerous players across the country, Blackshear has decided to move on and take his NFL chance. The move is understandable as another year probably wouldn't boost his draft stock especially given the extra tread that would put on him at RB which is known for short careers.

For Tech, Blackshear's departure shouldn't be a surprise with Malachi Thomas ready to be the lead back for the Hokies in 2022. Keshawn King could be set to take on the change-of-pace back role showing plenty of promising as a passing down back this season.
