Xavier Simmons has emerged as one of the top 2022 recruits in the state of North Carolina with the Hokies making him a top priority.
That showed last week with Simmons hearing from head coach Justin Fuente, LBs coach Tracy Claeys, and defensive line coach Darryl Tapp after midnight on September 1st.
During his conversation with Justin Fuente, the Hokies' head coach made it clear that Simmons is a priority target for Tech.
"It was great. He expressed how much he would love to have me become a Hokie," Simmons said.
His conversation with Tracy Claeys allowed Xavier Simmons to gain some familiarity with him and lay the groundwork for them building their relationship. His conversation with Tapp also went well and allowed him to receive some new graphics.
"It was great. He sent me some graphics and asked how I’m doing. I’ve been talking to him for a couple months now," Simmons said.
His relationship with Tapp is strong as a whole with both regularly talking about more than just football.
"It’s great! We talk about football and other stuff that’s going on in our lives," Simmons said.
His relationship with Darryl Tapp has helped the Hokies rise up in his recruitment in the early stages. That combined with Simmons being impressed with all that Tech has to offer has VT as an early frontrunner in his recruitment.
"They are one of my top choices. I love the academics, location, and the love and support the coaching staff has shown," Simmons said.
There are plenty of quality regional programs involved for Simmons with the Hokies among four currently recruiting him the hardest along with in-state programs North Carolina and Duke, and South Carolina.
It's early in the recruitment of Xavier Simmons, but the Hokies are off to a strong start for one of their top defensive targets in the 2022 class.
