Tony Robie's staff is back at full strength after bringing on James Green as an assistant coach last week.

The former Nebraska Cornhusker great returns to Blacksburg after spending three seasons as an assistant at his alma mater under head coach Mark Manning. Prior to his coaching role, Green competed at Blacksburg's Southeast Regional Training Center as a resident-athlete from 2020 to 2022.

Green's addition comes almost a month after Robie dismissed associate head coach Zach Tanelli in April. The Hokies' head whistle was excited to add a coach of Green's pedigree.

"James’ return to Blacksburg – this time in a coaching role – has generated tremendous excitement," Robie said in a press release about the hire. "During his two years with us as a resident athlete, he left a lasting impression across our entire organization. James carries himself with a quiet confidence that immediately earns respect and credibility from everyone he interacts with."

While in Lincoln, Green coached two national champions in Ridge Lovett and Antrell Taylor, anchoring the Huskers' consecutive top-3 finishes at nationals in 2025 and 2026, respectively.

An elite wrestler in his own right, Green is a two-time world medalist (Bronze in 2017, Silver in 2017), seven-time world team member (2015-2021, 2024), World Cup Champion (2018), four-time NCAA All-American (2012-15), and Big Ten champion (2014).

Green expressed gratitude for the opportunity, and looked forward to getting to work.

"My family and I are grateful to be welcomed back to Blacksburg. While I was part of the Southeast RTC, I felt as if I was an extension of the coaching staff. Now, having the opportunity to step into a coaching position, I really look forward to helping expand on what Hokies Wrestling has been able to build. Can’t wait to get to work. #ThisIsHome"
