Hokies Recruiting: Three-Star OLB Emmanuel Belmar Commits to Virginia Tech

The Virginia Tech Hokies have had an up-and-down recruiting cycle with two big commitments coming in June from quarterback Joshua Jackson and wide receiver Eric Kumah joining a class led by athlete Reggie Floyd. However, the Hokies had been struggling to gain any commits in the month of July.

Today, that changed with a defensive player committing to the Hokies’ Class of 2016.

Three-star outside linebacker Emmanuel Belmar of Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, Georgia committed to the Virginia Tech Hokies today via Twitter. The Hokies are one of ten major programs that have offered Belmar a scholarship including fellow ACC programs Syracuse and Virginia.

Belmar became the twelfth commit for the Hokies and the second outside linebacker along with 3-star recruit Victor Greene of Spotsylvania, Virginia. The Hokies previously had a commit from Georgia in QB Logan Byrd who decommitted from the Hokies, and committed to North Carolina in April.

Belmar is rated as a two-star prospect by Rivals, and has been given a three-star rating from 247 Sports. Belmar is ranked as the 84th best recruit from Georgia and the 62nd best outside linebacker by the 247 Sports Composite, while 247 Sports’ traditional rankings has Belmar as the 57th best outside linebacker and 67th best recruit in Georgia.

Belmar seems to project as a whip linebacker for the Hokies down the road with the prototypical size for an outside linebacker that can add 15 more pounds of muscle. Belmar is not a great athlete right now, but his frame projects for him to be able to improve his athletic skills.

Belmar also seems to have some good instincts around the line of scrimmage whether he is blitzing from the outside or is in containment on run defense. Belmar’s defensive discipline is also a plus that shows on run defense and could make him a valuable special teams player early on in Blacksburg.

Right now, the Hokies seem in very good shape to keep Belmar throughout the process, but Belmar could receive some larger offers from closer ACC and SEC schools that could flip the outside linebacker. However, that still seems unlikely at this point even if they do make the offers.

Emanuel Belmar is another solid addition for a Virginia Tech recruiting class that definitely needed to get some momentum after having a month-long drought since Eric Kumah committed.
