Virginia Tech hasn’t sent out a lot of defensive tackle offers making guys like 757 DTs Adarious Jones and Ben Smiley high priorities at DT. However, the Hokies aren’t afraid to cast a wide net either at defensive tackle recently offering defensive lineman Jason Gold out of Texas.

Gold told us that he feels his VT offer “opened up an opportunity for me to attend another great school, both academically and athletically.” While Gold has been offered as a defensive end by some schools, the Hokies offered him as a defensive tackle.
Gold told us that he doesn’t have any schools standing out to him in his recruitment or recruiting him harder than other schools. He took a visit to Kansas State this past weekend, but also told us that he “wants to get out to VT this spring.”
The Hokies don’t have much of a recruiting history in Texas, but the fact that they offered Gold showed that VT is definitely impressed by what he can bring to the table at DT. While the Hokies have appeared to gain some initial traction with Gold, it will be interesting to see if that traction continues on beyond the initial few days after offering him. In order to become a factor in his recruitment, the Hokies will need to get the Houston area DT to Blacksburg.
Virginia Tech has shown a willingness to stretch their net of recruiting outside of traditional areas to places like Texas and the deep South. Initially, the Hokies have gained some traction with Jason Gold, but have a lot of work to do in order to get his commitment.
