Virginia Tech kept its hot streak rolling on Friday night, defeating Duke 40-3 on the road in Durham. The 37-point win is the Hokies’ largest margin of victory in a dual meet this season.
Tech won nine of ten bouts and used seven bonus point victories to blow out the Blue Devils. The seven bonus point wins are the most in one dual by the Hokies this season, and consisted of two pins, four major decisions and a forfeit.
Zack Zavatsky had the highlight of the night, winning an 18-9 major decision at 184 pounds that earned him his 100th career win. He is the 12th Virginia Tech wrestler to reach the 100-win mark. The two-time ACC champion needs six wins to tie Chris Diaz for 11th on the Hokies’ all-time win list.
Other highlights from the dual include Mitch Moore and Billy Miller winning by fall. Moore pinned Josh Finesilver in just 45 seconds to earn his ninth fall of the season. Seven of his wins by fall have come in the first period.
Miller worked quickly as well, pinning heavyweight Araad Fisher in just 1:11 to close out the night. The fall was Miller’s first pin in a Virginia Tech singlet.
Joey Prata won his fourth major decision of the season, starting the dual off with a dominating 14-2 win over Harrison Campbell. BC LaPrade and Mekhi Lewis joined in on the bonus point fun, each winning their bouts by major decision as well.
The only ranked matchup of the night came at 174 pounds, where No. 7 David McFadden faced off against No. 17 Matt Finesilver. Finesilver was on a seven match win streak coming into the night, but McFadden was able to walk away with a 6-2 victory thanks to two takedowns and two near fall points.
The only match the Hokies lost was at 149 pounds, where Ryan Blees faced off against No. 6 Mitch Finesilver. Finesilver won a 3-1 decision thanks to a third-period takedown.
The win moves the Hokies to 8-2 in dual meets on the season and 2-0 in ACC duals. They’ll travel to Chapel Hill next Friday to take on UNC in their third ACC dual of the season.
