Appalachian State RB Commit Jeremiah Coney Set for Virginia Tech Visit After Recent Offer

VT Corps 2 VT Miami 2022 HT

As Virginia Tech makes their final push to land a few more talented high school recruits in their 2023 class, adding one more running back has arisen as a priority.

That recently led to the Hokies extending an offer to one of the best RBs in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Appalachian State commit Jeremiah Coney out of Richmond.

Coney had this to say about his reaction to receiving a VT offer.

"I was definitely excited. I've been interested in Tech since my freshman year," Coney said.

He received the offer while he was being visited at Hermitage High School by RBs coach Stu Holt and WRs coach Fontel Mines, one of VT's primary recruiters for Richmond and an alum of Hermitage himself. Coney had this to say about how his conversation and time with Holt and Mines went as a whole.

"It was definitely a great conversation, loved everything about it," Coney said.

The offer shouldn't come as a surprise in many ways after he had a productive senior season with 1,408 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns on 209 carries averaging almost 7 yards per carry. He did so against a fairly tough schedule where he faced traditionally strong programs like Varina, Thomas Dale, Lake Taylor, and L.C. Bird.

While some of the recruiting services have evaluated Coney as a linebacker, he is an athlete who could go either way and has the type of size and physicality to be a quality power running back. Given Tech's desire to be a physical offensive team, backs like Coney should fit fairly well in this offense.

Tech also doesn't have a true running back in this class currently though Tralon Mitchell and Thomas Williams are both athletes who could definitely start out at running back as well.

The Hokies also aren't the only school showing signs of trying to flip Coney as Iowa recently had an in-home visit with him per Coney's Twitter account. However, the Hawkeyes have not offered Coney yet so it remains to be seen how involved they will be.

So how does this offer impact his recruitment and where the Hokies stand in it?

"It definitely impacts a lot. I will be giving a lot of consideration to Virginia Tech," Coney said.

Looking ahead, Coney told us that he will be visiting the Hokies this weekend, December 9-11th. This is setting up to be a pretty strong recruiting weekend with Coney plus former Cincinnati WR commit and current high three-star recruit Ayden Greene on campus plus some current VT commits including Dante Lovett and standout Richmond DE Jason Abbey.

So what is Coney looking to see on his visit to Blacksburg?

"Somewhere I can call home," Coney said.

Keep an eye on Appalachian State RB commit Jeremiah Coney with the Hokies looking to flip him before Early Signing Day in less than two weeks.
