Make it 2 major transfer portal splashes in the same day for Virginia Tech as the Hokies landed a major commitment from Baylor QB Kyron Drones.

Drones is the second transfer commitment of the offseason for the Hokies joining ODU star WR Ali Jennings. He is a four-star transfer and top 10 QB transfer by 247 Sports and top 40 QB transfer by On3 as of December 12th.
He was the backup QB for Baylor this past season and was considered the QB of the future with plenty of disappointment among Baylor fans when Drones entered the portal. This past season, Drones played in 5 games going 14-23 for 219 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT plus 49 rushing yards and 2 TDs on 8 carries. He most notably appeared against West Virginia due to starter Blake Shapen getting injured with Drones going 7-14 for 95 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT plus 24 yards on 2 carries in what was his first appearance against a Power 5 team in his career.
This is a big time recruiting trail victory for offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen and the Hokies especially with Tech landing his commitment just days after Bowen flew to Texas to visit Drones as reported by Houston area TV reporter Mark Berman.
Former Baylor (@BUFootball) QB @KyronDrones, who led Shadow Creek High School to a state title in 2019, says one reason he chose to transfer to Virginia Tech (@HokiesFB) with 3 years of eligibility is how he was recruited by offensive coordinator @TylerBowen: “When I first met…” pic.twitter.com/u27NISeJSZ

Additionally, Evan Watkins of VT Scoop first reported (with Drones since confirming to us) that Drones then decided to visit VT after that. The Hokies were then able to get him to shut it down and commit even as Kentucky, Indiana, BYU, and Northwestern were also heavily pursuing him and before he had even visited anywhere else.
This is an impressive recruiting job by Bowen to make the all-in push to land a big time transfer portal QB and top priority for VT. The trip to Texas was definitely a gamble in some ways given the hectic nature of this time of year especially with multiple priority offensive targets (both transfer and HS) arriving on campus for official visits later that day. Bowen was considered a big time recruiter when he arrived at Virginia Tech and this recruitment is another example of why he is rightly known as such.
So with Drones on board, the stage is set for him to battle Grant Wells for the starting QB job starting this spring. The addition of Drones also likely means that Virginia Tech is done adding QBs for now especially with Tech having their top two plus having Devin Farrell and Tahj Bullock followed by now 2 2023 QB commits in Dylan Wittke and William Watson III who just flipped from Nebraska this weekend.
