In what has been a sensational year for Virginia Tech freshman Bo Bassett, it got even better Friday when he became a Senior World Champion in Astana, Kazakhstan. The Pennsylvania native methodically worked his way through the field before dismantling two-time Olympian Vazgen Tevanyan (Armenia) 9-1 in the 65 kg gold-medal match.

Bassett's road to the title bout had plenty of ups and downs. After opening his tournament with fall over Peiman Bioukagha Biabani (Canada), he dismantled Quentin Sticker (France) by technical fall, 12-1. His opponent in the quarterfinals—World Champion and multi-time medalist, Russia's Abasgahdzi Magomedov—provided Bassett's first real test of the tournament, taking a 12-3 lead in the second period. Undeterred, Bassett climbed back in it to ultimately take the match 14-13. A technical fall over Abdulmazhid Kudiev (Tajikistan) in the semifinals punched Bassett's ticket to the finals.

Against the 2023 bronze medalist Tevanyan, Bassett used his signature pace to dominate the match. After securing a takedown right before the intermission, it all went Bassett's way as he sent a volley of shots that Tevanyan couldn't match.

"It's a dream come true," Bassett told FloWrestling after the bout. "I just never thought I couldn't do it."

Early in the match, Tevanyan nearly locked up a cradle on the edge of the mat. Bassett was able to defend it, yielding just one point. But Bassett said he was prepared for the technique.

"Cradles are big in folkstyle, and I spent a lot of time with them in the room, so I'm very comfortable there," Bassett explained. "It was a dangerous situation. I didn't want to give up anything else. But I made him wrestle, and a lot of energy was used there on his part, so I'm thankful for that."

Despite the score, Bassett said the bout was tough and that Tevanyan was as good an opponent as he expected to face in the tournament. Still, he felt his pace was what won him the bout.

"That's where I'd like to get my opponents to," he said. "I'd like to get them to that point, but it's very hard. It's a style that's very demanding...But when we get to deep waters, that's where I swim."

His title in Kazakhstan is just the latest in a string of international successes for the Hokies' freshman this year. In July, Bassett cruised through the field to win gold at 65 kg in the Pan American Championships. A little over a month later, he won Gold at the U20 World Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia. He later fell short in the U23 World Championships, suffering his first loss in over a year in the quarterfinals.

"That was huge," Bassett said about his loss while speaking to the media earlier this month in Blacksburg. "It was a great opportunity. I would rather it happen now than in two weeks in Kazakhstan. So, I look at it as a blessing."

Bassett also addressed those who thought he wasn't ready to compete at the Senior level, speaking to his ability to overcome adversity whenever it strikes.

"At this point, people count me out for Seniors," he explained. "That's exciting in itself. I know the work I put in, and I fully trust the preparation and the coaches. I'm excited for another opportunity."

Bassett's title in Kazakhstan marks the first time that an American has won a 65-kg gold medal at the Senior World Championships in 20 years. He's also Virginia Tech's first-ever Senior World Champion.

There's no doubt that his resume has grown much longer this year, all before he's taken the mat in a college match. He'll make his Virginia Tech debut over the next few weeks, where he'll compete at 141 pounds.
