After beating out Ohio State for OT Walker Culver last year, Virginia Tech entered the final weeks of this recruiting cycle hoping to make it back-to-back classes that they beat out Ohio State down the stretch for an offensive lineman. The challenge this time was tougher with the Hokies pursuing four-star OL Doug Nester who was actively committed to Ohio State. However, Virginia Tech was more than up for the challenge even as Ohio State and Penn State were in hot pursuit of Nester as well. Four-star OL Doug Nester has flipped his commitment from Ohio State to Virginia Tech. Nester is the Hokies' fourth offensive line commit of their 2019 class alongside four-star OL Bryan Hudson, three-star OL Jesse Hanson, and three-star OL William Pritchard. He is also the first commit from the state of West Virginia in Virginia Tech's 2019 class. Nester becomes the third ne commitment since the Early Signing Window alongside three-star QB Knox Kadum and three-star JUCO DT Jaden Cunningham. To say this is a massive flip for Virginia Tech would probably still be understating what may be the biggest flip the Hokies have ever pulled off. Nester's decision to not sign with Ohio State was the first sign that both Virginia Tech and Penn State could make a run, but the Hokies sealed the deal over the weekend with an official visit that went exceptionally well and moved the Hokies from nearly becoming an after-thought to being the clear favorite to sign him. Nester's size gives him the versatility to play either guard or tackle, something that Vance Vice values highly beyond the talent that Nester brings to the table. While it is not normal for a true freshman to start, it wouldn't be surprising at all to see Nester in the battle to replace Braxton Pfaff at right guard especially after Christian Darrisaw started as a true freshman this past season, showing how the Hokies are more than willing to give young offensive linemen a shot.
