Former All-American and ACC champion TJ Stewart is leaving Virginia Tech and entering the transfer portal according to Intermat’s Robbie Wendell.

Stewart was a breakout star during the 2023-24 season, taking the nation by storm on his way to earning All-American honors and winning the ACC title at 184 as a redshirt freshman. However, due to various physical and injury reasons, Stewart was unable to find that same form this past season, finishing fourth at 184 at the ACC Championships and not qualifying for this year’s NCAA Championships.

After a tough season, Stewart has decided to reset and head elsewhere, bringing two years of eligibility with him wherever he lands.

His departure creates an obvious need for the Hokies at 184, especially with veteran Sam Fisher also graduating. It’s possible that a young guy like Gage Wright or a veteran backup like Ty Finn could slide into that spot, but VT will certainly look to the transfer portal first to fill that spot.

This is also the spot where the Hokies do not have a clear or even reasonably possible replacement directly in line as Sonny Sasso is ready to go at 197 while Dillon Campbell and Gage Wright could both be startable options at 133 and 174 respectively if VT isn’t able to land a quality replacement via the portal. 184 is likely the top priority for the Hokies in the portal now given the current roster breakdown.
