Hokies Women's Soccer: #7 Virginia Tech Hosts #1 Florida State In Huge ACC Showdown

Once again, the Virginia Tech Hokies are in the national title hunt in women's soccer, and enter their biggest game of the season tonight against the #1 Florida State Seminoles. After a 3-0 win over Miami, the Hokies rose to their highest spot nationally in the rankings this season, #7. Virginia Tech has been quite impressive this season with the Hokies' only two losses coming to Clemson and North Carolina who are ranked sixth and ninth respectively. The Hokies also have an impressive group of victories that includes a win over currently third-ranked West Virginia. The Hokies are battling for a spot in the ACC Tournament with only four teams making it to the ACC Tournament. The Hokies currently are in the top four in ACC, but a loss would drop them to a tie for fourth, but would open the door for the Tar Heels to be in control of their own destiny if the Hokies take care of business at Pittsburgh and Notre Dame. The Hokies have never beaten Florida State in women's soccer, but this may be the best opportunity the Hokies have ever had to pull off the upset. Even though the Seminoles are #1, the Hokies are playing quite well right now and know the importance of this game in not only making the ACC Tournament, but also improving their chances of getting a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Hokies have the talent to put up some goals in this game led by forward Murielle Tiernan who has an impressive 12 goals so far this season. Tiernan is one of the top forwards in the country, and is the type of player that could carry the Hokies to a big win. The heart of this team is senior midfielder Ashley Meier who is going to go down as one of the best players ever for the Hokies. Meier definitely has a future in professional soccer and is a playmaker out of the midfield with 6 goals and 4 assists so far this season. Florida State may not have an elite goal scorer like Tiernan, but have shown plenty of options while only giving up 7 goals all season. Florida State is led by freshman star midfielder Megan Connolly who has shined this season with five goals and 10 assists so far to lead the Seminoles in assists and points. A win tonight for the Hokies will almost certainly guarantee them a spot in the ACC Tournament, and increase their chances of receiving a #1 seed while a loss will mean they no longer control their own destiny in reaching the ACC Tournament. After losing at home to North Carolina earlier this season, the Hokies will be looking to get the big home win that they've been looking for in ACC play to push them into the ACC Tournament. We'll just have to see if the Hokies can pull off the upset against the Seminoles tonight?
