Virginia Tech opened a roughly 30-minute portion of practice for the first time during this year's fall camp. Here are some of my notes from both sides of the ball including the latest on the offensive line and quarterback plus injury and freshman updates, and much more.
Latest on the Offensive Line
One of the most wide open competitions is on the offensive line with both tackle spots up for grabs and maybe a guard spot though I would be surprised if Brody Meadows wasn't starting at guard opposite Layth Ghannam.
During one drill that featured the full offensive line setup, the interior was as expected with Kyle Altuner at center plus Ghamman and Meadows at guard. Meanwhile, offensive tackle was the same as it was during the Spring Game with Ohio State transfer Justin Terry at left tackle and Montavious Cunningham at right tackle.
Oklahoma transfer Logan Howland is healthy and starting out with the second with Aidan Lynch as the opposite tackle. Lucas Austin is working at guard instead of tackle during the portion that we saw, with Austin part of the second team interior offensive line along with Tommy Ricard and Benjamin Eziuka.
It shouldn't be a surprise that Howland is with the second team to start camp after missing the entirety of spring. Howland was working a lot at left tackle during the drills and should be the biggest challenger to Terry and Cunningham's current hold on the left and right tackle jobs. This will be a long battle but with Johnny Garrett hurt (more on that in a second), this may be a three-man battle at this point between Terry, Cunningham, and Howland.
