Virginia Tech gained its biggest recruiting victory of the decade Thursday when four-star QB Peter Bourque announced his commitment to Virginia Tech, choosing the Hokies over fellow finalist Georgia.
The decision was one that took the college football recruiting world by storm as James Franklin reminded lots of people that his recruiting prowess wasn’t tied to him being at Penn State, and that he knows how to build a strong recruiting program. Virginia Tech also showed that the promise of increased resources to elevate VT Football is real especially given what it takes to land a top 100 overall recruit who is also among the top ten quarterbacks in his class.
While VT has had plenty of four-star commitments over the years, the Hokies have rarely landed a consensus top 100 recruit like Bourque, who in many ways is the best recruit that VT has landed this decade and the best quarterback recruit that has chosen VT in over 15 years.
His 247 Sports Composite rating of 0.9637 ranks him 12th among all the recruits who have chosen VT since the turn of the century. Per the 247 Sports Composite, Bourque is also the highest-rated recruit to choose the Hokies since four-star DB Devon Hunter chose the Hokies in the 2017 class.
Even more notable is the fact that Bourque is the highest-rated quarterback commit for the Hokies since Logan Thomas in the 2009 class. He is also the fifth highest-rated QB commit for the Hokies this century behind Tyrod Taylor, Marcus Vick, Bryan Randall, and Thomas.
247 Sports isn’t the only recruiting service that ranks him very highly as Rivals’ composite rating has him as Virginia Tech’s highest-rated recruit since VT landed Doug Nester in the 2019 class.
Bourque also elevates VT’s overall high school recruiting rank despite VT only having 12 commits currently as 247 Sports ranks VT 17th overall while Rivals ranks the Hokies 19th. VT seems likely now to land a top 25 high school recruiting class, something that the Hokies haven’t done since 2018 per 247 Sports.
A top 20 finish is a serious possibility at this point too with Bourque on board, with that not being achieved by the Hokies since 2008 though that is before 247 Sports existed. Per Rivals, a top 20 finish would be the first since 2012 while a top 25 finish would be the first since 2019.
Peter Bourque’s commitment is truly a historic one for the Hokies with James Franklin flexing his recruiting muscle and Virginia Tech emerging as an eastern force in a way that VT hasn’t been in a long time. If Franklin can keep this up, the Hokies could easily have their first top 20 class in 15+ years with the 2027 class.
Don’t be surprised if VT achieves that after landing four-star QB Peter Bourque to lead the way.
