Early Signing Day has officially and gone with James Franklin signing Virginia Tech's first top 25 high school recruiting class since 2018 despite having only two weeks on the job. While Tech still has three-star TE commit Isaiah Pina to try to sign in February along with the possibility of a couple late blooming offers from the few unsigned recruits, Franklin's focus now will shift towards other avenues.

Here's a look at the primary areas of focus for Franklin and Virginia Tech with just under a month till the transfer portal fully opens on January 2nd.

1. Staffing Decisions

James Franklin's core front office and recruiting staff are in place but the focus now has to shift towards who his coordinators will be and then building out the rest of his primary staff.

Penn State finally making a hire in Matt Campbell along with retaining interim head coach and long-time assistant head coach Terry Smith should start to speed up some of the process. It's almost certain that Franklin is considering bringing several on-field assistants with him to Blacksburg and those assistants no longer have the limbo of wondering who they might be coaching for in Happy Valley versus who they'd be coaching for in Blacksburg or elsewhere. That should allow the dam to break a little on some of these decisions.
