Virginia Tech running back Jeffrey Overton Jr. received plenty of recognition following the best performance of his young career.
Overton was named the ACC Running Back of the Week on Monday after rushing for a career-high 209 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries in Virginia Tech's 21-14 win over Boston College. Pro Football Focus also selected Overton as the running back on both its National and ACC Teams of the Week.
The sophomore provided the biggest play of the afternoon with the game tied at 14 late in the fourth quarter.
Overton took a handoff 76 yards down the right sideline for the go-ahead touchdown, completing Virginia Tech's comeback from an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit. He also converted the two-point attempt that tied the game on the Hokies' previous possession and added three receptions for 19 yards.
His 209 rushing yards were the sixth-highest single-game total on record at Virginia Tech. Through four games, Overton is averaging 102.3 rushing yards per game, the second-most in the ACC, and has scored five total touchdowns.
He's on pace for the most single-season rushing yards by a Virginia Tech running back since 2011, when David Wilson eclipsed 1,700 yards.
PFF graded Overton at 82.1 overall against the Eagles, the highest offensive grade among Virginia Tech players. He also earned an 83.8 rushing grade.
Overton's emergence has also caught the attention of his teammates.
"It's exciting to see him play," wide receiver Que'Sean Brown said. "I try to make every block I can for him and all the other running backs. But [Overton's] a special, a special kid."
Brown also pointed toward Overton's versatility, noting his ability to make an impact both as a runner and receiver.
"He definitely helped our team a lot," Brown said. "He impacted in a couple of different ways, whether that's rushing or, you know, getting a reception, getting a first down, making people miss."
Overton and the Hokies will now turn their attention toward another undefeated opponent, with 4-0 Pitt visiting Lane Stadium on Friday night.
