Kaleb Spencer Providing Unexpected Instant Impact for Virginia Tech

When Kaleb Spencer arrived this summer at Virginia Tech, expectations for what he would do this season were basically non-existent given the late arrival.

Spencer was seen only as someone who might compete for a rotational role in 2024, while also being a redshirt candidate after playing on special teams for Miami as a true freshman, leaving him with a redshirt still to use. A similar special teams role at VT also seemed possible for Spencer, but expectations were quite low for him contributing to the defense on 2024.

However, it was clear early on in fall camp that Spencer might just contribute on Tech’s defense this season. On August 8th, I wrote about how Spencer was already turning heads for everyone who watched him including my own, as I was impressed by an early portion of practice we saw where he had an interception in one drill and impressed in that drill overall.

Still, no one could have imagined just yet that Spencer would be a dynamic weapon in Virginia Tech's linebacker rotation for the 2024 season. Well, two months later, Spencer is forcing Tech to find ways to get him on the field even with a productive starter in Keonta Jenkins ahead of him on the depth chart.

And Tech has been rewarded for giving him that chance, especially over the past two weeks of the season.
