It's been years since Virginia Tech hasn't had even a hint of a competition for the starting quarterback till this offseason when it was clear throughout that Kyron Drones was going to be the guy for the Hokies. That's a big change from a year ago when Drones was trying to find his footing at a new program and competing with an incumbent starting QB in Grant Wells to be the Hokies' QB1.
That situation put Drones in a different spot wondering if he was doing enough to win the starting job and wondering what type of leader he could be given the fact that he was in a battle for the starting job. Now that he's the established QB1, Drones doesn't have to worry about looking over his shoulder, which is allowing him to work and lead with more confidence.
"It's definitely a different feeling than what I came into last year because last year, I was in a competition, so you really don't know how to be that leader because you don't know who all is going to listen to you with you being in a battle. And then you're looking over your shoulder every play just wondering when coach is gonna take me out, wondering if coach liked what I did. It's a different feeling for me just being more confident in me myself, the offense, and the whole team. And then being another coach on the field, what I want to do is see us go out there and execute plays no matter what," Drones said
