Heide comes to Blacksburg after spending his first three seasons at San Diego State. He started 31 of 32 games this past season while averaging 5.6 points and 4.5 rebounds in 19.1 minutes per game while shooting 61.5% from the field and 51.0% from the free-throw line. He has one year of eligibility remaining plus a redshirt.
Heide is the second transfer commitment for the Hokies along with Oklahoma F transfer Kuol Atak.
The 6'9'' Heide is an intriguing pickup who can definitely be expected to compete for the second starting frontcourt job next to Amani Hansberry. Heide doesn't offer much ability to stretch the floor, but he is very efficient in the paint with a 65.6% career field goal shooting percentage.
Despite averaging just over 19 minutes per game, Heide's 65 total offensive rebounds ranked ninth overall in the Mountain West and show how his rebounding is one of the biggest strengths of his game. Heide's advanced defensive numbers suggest the defensive side of his game combined with his rebounding are his strengths as he had a 2.7 defensive box score plus/minus, 1.1 defensive win shares, and 102.4 defensive rating this season.
While Heide doesn't bring a whole lot beyond efficient paint scoring on the offensive end and isn't much of a shot blocker, his defense and rebounding are quite good and would make him a solid top backup big man at minimum and a solid option to compete for the starting center job.
