After a busy opening week of the transfer portal casting a wide net, Virginia Tech has landed their first transfer commitment of the cycle.
Oklahoma F transfer Kuol Atak revealed today that he has committed to Virginia Tech. The 6'9'' Atak averaged 7.0 points and 1.3 rebounds in 12.4 minutes per game while shooting 46.5% from the field including 41.3% from three-point range on 4.3 three-point attempts per game as a freshman at Oklahoma. He has three years of eligibility remaining.
With Atak's addition, the Hokies now have seven players on their 2026-27 roster, though that does include football WR Shamarius Peterkin who was on the basketball team this past season but did not play. VT has at least eight open roster spots, possibly nine depending on Peterkin's status and how his roster spot counts.
Atak is an intriguing addition who projects as a hybrid forward who could end up working at the three or the four. If he is going to be used more in the frontcourt, he will have plenty of work to do in the weight room as he is only around 190 pounds or so which could cause problems defensively against more physical frontcourt players.
Atak was a very above-average offensive player for Oklahoma this past season who earned a 5.7 box score plus/minus driven by his 6.8 offensive box score plus/minus plus an impressive offensive rating of 126.7 and 0.8 offensive win shares despite his limited minutes. His shooting will be an absolute weapon for Virginia Tech to take advantage of and should fit very well in a Mike Young offense that thrives with players who can create spacing and can shoot it.
Atak's defensive game will certainly be an area of focus especially after he had a -1.1 in defensive box score plus/minus and is a little thin for a true frontcourt player. The potential is certainly there given the fact he's 6'9'' but there's definitely plenty of room for him to grow.
Atak likely projects as a top backup at the three and the four for the Hokies next season. His addition does not impact Virginia Tech's prioritization of finding a center to pair with Amani Hansberry next season.
