As Virginia Tech’s defensive coordinator continues on, plenty of names have emerged and fallen. One of the names brought up the most recently by fans and by a source has been Ohio State safeties coach Matt Guerrieri.

In some ways, Guerrieri being involved would help explain some of the potential timing delays given his involvement with Ohio State’s national title. That delay for a coach in the postseason isn’t anything unusual either as you immediately saw Notre Dame DC Al Golden linked with the Cincinnati Bengals after Monday’s title game while Ben Johnson quickly landed the Chicago Bears head coaching job after landing

So could it be Guerrieri? Well let’s dive into the case for him as the next defensive coordinator.

Check out my look at the case for Penn State co-DC Anthony Poindexter here and the case for Geoff Collins here.

Positives

Recruiting Upside

One thing that’s clear is that Guerrieri is a very good recruiter with his recruit list on 247 Sports from his Duke tenure standing out in particular.

Guerrieri has recruited multiple four-stars and a ton of high three-stars as well especially during his time at Duke.
