On Wednesday, the 15th of July, David McCann signed with the New York Yankees per multiple reports.

This news comes as a surprise, as McCann was only a redshirt sophomore. He would've had ample opportunity in his junior season to improve his draft stock and retain his leverage when it came to bonus negotiations.

McCann spent two years at Virginia Tech, playing as a premier power bat. In those two years, he appeared in 99 games, slashing .273/.395/.571. He was projected by yours truly to start a lot of games at DH for the Hokies in 2025.

This is obviously bad news for the Hokies, who still have to worry about Henry Cooke potentially signing a UDFA deal, which would leave them with just two catchers, one of which has never seen college baseball.

The other big impact is that the Hokies have lost arguably their top power bat. They will likely look to the portal to try to acquire a replacement though that may be difficult this late in the portal cycle.
