Virginia Tech made some noise on the recruiting trail this afternoon as three-star OT Tyrell Simpson out of Leland, NC flipped his commitment from Rutgers to the Hokies.

Simpson is the Hokies' seventh commit of this class including the second offensive line commit of this class along with three-star OL Buddy Wegdam. He is also the second commit from North Carolina this cycle joining three-star DL Kamdon Gillespie.

Simpson confirmed to me that he visited Virginia Tech this past weekend, with that being first reported by Evan Watkins of 247 Sports' VT Scoop. He also gives VT its second commitment from this past official visit weekend after landing a commitment from three-star DB Zaevion Cleveland yesterday.

In addition to VT and Rutgers, he also held Power 4 offers from Florida and Kentucky according to 247 Sports.

Simpson is a fascinating prospect who has tremendous size at 6'7'' and 310 pounds according to 247 Sports. That's the type of size that makes it clear his future is almost certainly at tackle rather than on the interior.

This is an impressive recruiting victory for the Hokies to flip Simpson from Rutgers. OL coach Matt Moore has significantly raised the level of offensive line recruiting from his predecessor Ron Crook, with that reality continuing to boost the Hokies in the trenches this offseason both in the transfer portal and now in high school recruiting.

The focus at offensive tackle will shift even more onto four-star OT Thomas Wilder out of 757 powerhouse Green Run HS. Three-star recruits Adrian Hamilton and Malcolm Gaston remain interior offensive line prospects to monitor.
