After rewarding Reggie Floyd with the #1 jersey for the 2019 season earlier this week, Virginia Tech revealed today that Tyree Rodgers will be the first Hokie to receive the #25 jersey this season.
Rodgers, the cornerback turned safety, will be wearing the #25 jersey for the first time in his career. The redshirt junior is the backup at free safety after having 18 tackles including 1 for loss plus 1 forced fumbles in 12 games (3 starts) last season.
As a veteran player, Rodgers seems poised to have a large role as a leader of some of Virginia Tech's special teams units with this being the latest proof of the Hokies' confidence in what he can do on special teams. Additionally, Rodgers may also receive some defensive playing time when one of the Hokies' starting safeties need a breather and the Hokies need a greater emphasis on their pass coverage over stopping the run depending on the situation.
Virginia Tech is two days away from their season opener with Tyree Rodgers kicking off the fourth season of the Hokies awarding the #25 jersey to the special teams player of the week in honor of legendary Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer.
