Virginia Tech's linebacker room was already not the deepest room, but the Hokies' depth took a hit when Jayden McDonald chose to enter the transfer portal in search of a starting opportunity.
The need for quality depth further increased this spring as it started to become clear that four-star freshman Brett Clatterbaugh's future may not be at linebacker along with the fact that Noah Chambers and Brennan Johnson didn't arrive till the summer. Plus, the Hokies were moving Kaleb Spencer to a different position as an inside linebacker, a shift that the Hokies are excited about but something that is indeed a notable shift.
That combination made it clear to Brent Pry that the Hokies needed to sure up the depth in their linebacker room during the spring portal window.
