Virginia Tech CB Nadir Thompson Enters the Transfer Portal

Virginia Tech had their first transfer portal entry in several days with CB Nadir Thompson entering the transfer portal as first reported by Rivals.

Thompson becomes the second defensive back to enter the transfer portal from the Hokies along with safety Da'Shawn Elder. Thompson is a grad transfer and should have two years of eligibility thanks to the free COVID year in addition to his early career redshirt.

Thompson was primarily a backup during his time at Virginia Tech who did make one start during the 2020 season against Duke. During his time in Blacksburg, Thompson played in a total of 27 games putting up 9 tackles including 1 for loss plus a forced fumble.

While Thompson did show promise during the 2020 season, he was simply never able to climb up the depth chart with younger cornerbacks like Dorian Strong and DJ Harvey climbing ahead of him. His departure gives him a chance to find a starting cornerback opportunity whether that ends up being at the Group of 5 or FCS level.

For the Hokies, Thompson was unlikely to be in the two-deep on the depth chart so his departure opens up a scholarship that could be to bring in another DB whether that's at cornerback or safety. Tech could also use his scholarship on the offensive line or at other general needs the Hokies may have.
