Perry is the third Hokie to announce his intentions to enter the transfer portal, joining DT Malachi Madison and DL Ishmael Findlayter. He only played 11 defensive snaps against Stanford for the Hokies and will have two years of eligibility at his next destination.
While his pedigree as a former top 100 recruit and the Bama reputation had many optimistic that Perry could make an impact, the reality was that patience would be needed given that Perry only played two special teams snaps during his time in Tuscaloosa. There was also no guarantee that Perry would develop into even a rotational player as well after not breaking through with the Crimson Tide.
Now, it's clear that Perry never really fit in Blacksburg with Brent Pry and J.C. Price both having comments that hinted at issues surrounding Perry and his ability to fit in with this program. He'll now likely drop down to the FCS or maybe Group of 5 level after not working out with the Hokies.
These recent defensive line departures don't change the math on the Hokies bringing in 2-3 defensive linemen via the transfer portal at minimum. That likely will include a couple linemen who have multiple years of eligibility remaining.
