"It was a good first step for us from a protection standpoint, from a run game standpoint," Franklin said.
It's only one performance, and the quality of competition has to be considered, but Virginia Tech needed a positive starting point after spending much of the offseason piecing together its offensive front.
Old Dominion should provide the group with a more meaningful test.
The offensive line's ability to protect Grunkemeyer will become increasingly important if Virginia Tech wants to connect on more of the explosive passing opportunities Franklin felt it missed against VMI. Likewise, avoiding negative plays and keeping the Hokies ahead of the chains would go a long way toward addressing Franklin's concerns about sustaining drives.
