Virginia Tech men's basketball landed one of its most significant high school commitments in recent program history Wednesday, securing a pledge from four-star forward Tyran Frazier.

Frazier, a 6-foot-9, 200-pound prospect from The Principia School in St. Louis, is rated as a unanimous four-star recruit and a top-60 player nationally in the 2027 class. On3 ranks Frazier No. 52 overall and the No. 5 center in the class, while ESPN has him at No. 58 overall and 247 Sports ranks him No. 59.

Frazier officially visited Virginia Tech over Labor Day weekend and ultimately chose Mike Young and the Hokies from an offer sheet that included Cincinnati, Creighton, Miami, Mississippi State, Missouri, Saint Louis, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and West Virginia. He also took an official visit to West Virginia in late September.

The commitment gives Virginia Tech a highly regarded building block for its 2027 recruiting class.

Frazier brings considerable length to the frontcourt with a reported 7-foot-1 wingspan. His athleticism and defensive potential are among the strongest parts of his game, while he can also make an impact running the floor in transition. CBS Sports director of scouting Adam Finkelstein compared Frazier's game to former Hokie Tobi Lawal, who became one of Virginia Tech's most athletic and productive frontcourt players.

The ceiling is massive for Frazier, but he is a little more raw of a prospect and will likely need some time to develop before claiming a significant role.

The commitment is also significant from a recruiting standpoint.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Frazier is currently the No. 51 overall player in the 2027 class with a 0.9802 rating. That would make him the second-highest-rated Virginia Tech commitment in the site's database, trailing only former Hokie Dorian Finney-Smith. Frazier ranks ahead of notable Virginia Tech signees Neoklis Avdalas and Nickeil Alexander-Walker.

Virginia Tech has relied heavily on the transfer portal to construct its roster in recent years, making the addition of a nationally-ranked high school prospect particularly notable. The Hokies signed four high school players in the previous cycle, including top-100 prospect Christian Gurdak, but Frazier represents another step up in national recruiting profile.

There is still plenty of time before Frazier arrives in Blacksburg, and Virginia Tech's roster could look dramatically different by the 2027-28 season. But his commitment gives the Hokies a potential centerpiece to build that future roster around.

If Frazier develops as his ranking and physical tools suggest he can, he has the potential to become more than simply another member of the rotation. His defensive versatility, length and athleticism give him the type of upside that could eventually make him an important piece of Virginia Tech's frontcourt — and potentially a face of the program.

For Young and the Hokies, Wednesday's commitment was not just an addition for 2027. It was an important recruiting win that could pay dividends well beyond Frazier's eventual arrival in Blacksburg.
