BLACKSBURG, Va. — Coming off a bye week after a road victory over Clemson, Virginia Tech is preparing for Friday night's matchup against SMU with improved health along the offensive line, growing confidence defensively and an opportunity to build on its recent momentum.
Head coach James Franklin, offensive line coach Matt Moore and several Virginia Tech players discussed injury updates, individual development and the challenges presented by the Mustangs during media availabilities this week.
Offensive Line Getting Healthier Ahead of SMU
Virginia Tech expects to regain two experienced offensive linemen, Montavious Cunningham and Brody Meadows, ahead of its matchup with SMU.
Franklin confirmed that both players are expected to return, providing additional depth and versatility to a position group that has battled injuries throughout the season.
"We expect having Montavius back," Franklin said. "What we're trying to figure out is where is the best place to use him. He's played both tackle and guard for us, so we'll figure that out as the week goes on."
Franklin also said Meadows' return provides valuable experience after several weeks of uncertainty surrounding his availability. Justin Terry, however, is not yet expected to return.
Cunningham's versatility could be especially important as the Hokies look to improve their rushing attack and pass protection.
"Part of the reason I'm probably in a little bit better mood tonight is having Montavius out at practice," Franklin said.
Moore echoed Franklin's assessment, explaining that Cunningham's ability to play multiple positions gives the coaching staff flexibility in the event of additional injuries.
"It's not really mix and match," Moore said. "It's just trying to be prepared for things."
Center Kyle Altuner also welcomed the return of Cunningham and Meadows, saying the bye week allowed him to recover from minor injuries while other members of the offensive line worked toward returning.
