Things have calmed down in terms of commitments for Virginia Tech over the past week, but the next few weeks could be big for the Hokies on the trail. Here's some of the latest Virginia Tech football recruiting notes.
3* QB Tahj Bullock
Tahj Bullock visited Virginia Tech over the weekend and told us that it "went well" calling VT a "great place." While Bullock wasn't able to interact with coaches in person due to the current dead period, he was able to "look around for the most part and get a feel for everything."
Bullock had this to say about how his visit impacted his recruitment and VT's standing in it.
"Virginia Tech has stood high with me for a while. The visit helped me get a great feel for what it’s like in Blacksburg and clarify some things for me," Bullock said.
Right now, Virginia Tech looks like the slight favorite on paper though UCLA and Rutgers are still right there battling for the three-star QB from New Jersey.
Landing Bullock would gIve VT another boost of momentum on the recruiting trail as the Hokies pursue other talented recruits in the Northern Mid-Atlantic like four-star RB Audric Estime and fast-rising DB Donovan McMillon.
3* DT Earl Miller
Earl Miller told us that Virginia Tech is among four schools currently standing out in his recruitment along with Boston College, Pittsburgh (who hasn't offered him yet), and Coastal Carolina. Those are also the same four schools that are recruiting him the hardest with Pitt looking like the school that may be closest to offering him next.
Miller added that the "coaching staff" and that "their program is amazing" are the reasons why the Hokies are currently standing out for Miller.
Tech seems likely to try to land 2-3 defensive tackles this cycle with three-star DT Tyas Martin already committed and four-star DT Tyleik Williams looking like a top overall target regardless of numbers. Miller also comes from Delray Beach, FL where the Hokies have landed some sleeper defensive line talent in the past including Luther Maddy and Dadi Nicolas.
Miller remains a player to watch as new defensive line coaches Bill Teerlinck and Darryl Tapp look to build a strong defensive line class.
3* WR Kylen Austin
Three-star WR Kylen Austin told us that the Hokies are "still one of the top" schools in his recruitment with his visit prior to the pandemic dead period being a main reason why.
"When I went on this visit before the virus, I really loved it and I could see myself there," Austin said.
The Hokies are also among several schools that are recruiting him the hardest, a group that also includes Virginia, Liberty, and Yale. Leading the charge has been WRs coach Jafar Williams with the two building a relationship that "is getting stronger and stronger."
Austin doesn't seem to be anywhere close to a decision as he is hoping to take some more visits with Virginia Tech likely to be among those schools given their current standing in his recruitment.
Kylen Austin remains a WR target to keep an eye on as the Hokies look to add to their wide receiver group that includes talented Richmond WR Jaylen Jones.
