After John Szefc was officially announced as Virginia Tech's new baseball manager last week, one of the first thoughts was who would Szefc look to add to his staff with it seeming quite likely that Szefc would look to bring some of his Maryland staff with him to Blacksburg if not all of it.
While that proved not to be possible with Maryland assistant Rob Vaughn being promoted to replace Szefc, the Hokies' new head coach will bring at least one of his assistants with him to Blacksburg.

Virginia Tech announced that Maryland pitching coach Ryan Fecteau has been hired to the same position for the Hokies. Fecteau was with Maryland this past season as the Terps' pitching coach this past season while making stops at multiple smaller schools before that including Bryant where he helped bring the Bulldogs to national prominence thanks to a strong pitching staff.
Fecteau's resume is quite impressive as Maryland's pitching staff had the lowest ERA in Big 10 games while also finishing in the top 60 nationally in WHIP, walks allowed per nine innings, strikeouts per nine innings, strikeout-to-walk ratio, and WHIP. Fecteau also saw his pitchers receive major honors with Brian Shaffer being the Big 10 Pitcher of the Year and Tyler Blohm being a Freshman All-American,
Fecteau was also the pitching coach at Bryant while they had three seasons of 40+ wins along with five-straight regular season conference titles including earning the 2 seed in the Charlottesville Regional in 2016. Fecteau also had four pitching staffs from 2012 to 2016 finish in the top 25 nationally in ERA while also having pitcher James Karinchak earn Freshman All-American honors in 2015 and All-American honors in 2016.
Ryan Fecteau has an impressive resume from his stops at Bryant and Maryland while having also climbed the ladder from the lower ranks before that which included stops at USC Upstate, Southern Utah, and St. Lawrence. Fecteau appears to be one of the top young pitching coaches in America and a name that will continue to be on the rise with the Hokies getting a great pitching coach.
