Virginia Tech starting LB and captain Caleb Woodson has been charged with a misdemeanor DWI as first reported by Tech Sideline's Andy Bitter.
Per Bitter's report, the incident took place this past Saturday with Woodson due to appear in court on September 9th. Virginia Tech did not follow up with a request for comment that we made, though they do appear to have shared with Tech Sideline as shared by Andy Bitter. The statement is as follows.
“We are aware of an incident involving Caleb Woodson. We take this matter seriously and will handle it according to athletic department policy and university policy. As this is a legal matter, we will have no further comment until the process is complete.”
This is not the first driving incident for Woodson this summer as Roanoke Times reporter Damien Sordelett noted that Woodson also was charged with reckless driving back on July 30th for going 96mph in a 70mph zone. His court date for that incident is one week later on September 16th.
Head coach Brent Pry has his regularly scheduled press conference today at noon where I would expect we will hear him address further the situation with Woodson and whether he will be facing a suspension ahead of Sunday's game against No. 13 South Carolina. It is important to note that since this is a misdemeanor and not a felony, this charge does not trigger an automatic suspension per Virginia Tech policy.
We will have more as this story develops.
