The Virginia Tech Hokies have been doing well on the recruiting trail with 7 commits over the past 3 weeks including 4 commits within the past week. However, the Hokies are also making the cut for many of their other top targets including one of the top defensive lineman left on their board.
Four-star DL Alim McNeill released his top 6 which included Virginia Tech, Florida State, Penn State, North Carolina, Duke, and NC State. The four-star DT has an illustrious offer list that includes Clemson, Florida, Louisville, Michigan, South Carolina, Tennessee, TCU, Minnesota, Arkansas, Arizona State, Kentucky, Purdue, Boston College, Wake Forest, Maryland, Rutgers, and more in addition to McNeill's top 6 with Louisville, Michigan, South Carolina, and Clemson missing McNeill's cut from 10 to 6.
McNeill is well-regarded with 247 Sports ranking him as the 81st best recruit in America with 247 Sports, ESPN, and the 247 Sports Composite ranking him as a four-star recruit and Rivals having him as a three-star recruit. McNeil is ranked as the 38th best DE by ESPN, 28th best DT by Rivals, 20th best DT by the 247 Sports Composite, and ninth best DT by 247 Sports.
McNeill is also one of the top recruits in the state of North Carolina with Rivals ranking him 18th in North Carolina, ESPN ranking him 14th, the 247 Sports Composite ranking him tenth, and 247 Sports ranking him sixth.
McNeill is right near the top of the board for the Hokies on the defensive line with Virginia Tech being the second power 5 school to offer him last December months before his recruitment took off. Now, the Hokies are in a recruiting battle for a guy that they were able to find first in a loaded North Carolina class that Virginia Tech is looking to take advantage of with four commits already.
Charley Wiles is leading the recruiting charge and has been incredibly good on the recruiting trail this cycle being the primary recruiter for five Virginia Tech commits according to 247 Sports
including four-star WR Tre Turner, three-star DB Chamarri Conner, three-star CB DJ Crossen, three-star ATH Nadir Thompson, and three-star DT Joe Kane. Wiles has been quite successful this cycle getting the players on his recruiting turf with McNeill being one of his top remaining targets from his recruiting territories.
This is setting up to be an in-state vs. out-of-state recruiting battle with three in-state schools (UNC, Duke, NC State) making the cut along with three major out-of-state programs (VT, Penn State, Florida State). Right now, Virginia Tech appears to still be one of the frontrunners in McNeill's recruitment and will definitely do everything they can to add another talented defensive lineman who would make the #NC2VT movement even bigger.
Right now, Virginia Tech has a lot of momentum in North Carolina with Alim McNeill being among those North Carolina that the Hokies have high on their board still and hope to add to a very good 2018 class.
