Justin Fuente and his Virginia Tech football staff have plenty of obvious connections to the Memphis area. In the 2022 cycle, they're looking to land one of the area's top talents, four-star ATH Kody Jones.

The good news for the Hokies is that they are off to a strong start in his recruitment.

Jones told us that the Hokies are currently "one of the top schools" in his recruitment and had this to say about why that's the case.

"The relationship with the coaches and when we talk, it’s always a good conversation," Jones said.

Tech is primarily pursuing Jones as a cornerback though they've also shown interest in him as a running back as well. With that, Virginia Tech has had CBs coach Ryan Smith and RBs coach Adam Lechtenberg leading the charge in their pursuit of Jones.

He had this to say about his relationship with Smith.

"Me and Coach Smith have a good relationship. We play the game together, we FaceTime, so we have a pretty good relationship but it can always get better," Jones said.

Additionally, Jones has built a solid relationship with Adam Lechtenberg.

"We have a good relationship also. We always check on each other and things like that," Jones said.

Unsurprisingly, Virginia Tech was among the first schools to reach out to Kody Jones after midnight on September 1st along with in-state Tennessee and Penn State. Specifically, it was the Hokies' head coach Justin Fuente who reached out to Jones, making it clear that Jones is a priority for Tech in the 2022 class.

Jones had this to say about his conversation with Fuente and what Fuente's message was for him.

"It was good. He was saying that he really wants me and wants me to come, and he can’t wait to get to know me better," Jones said.

Kody Jones may not be a well-known name yet among Tech fans, but he's one that those who follow recruiting should get familiar with as the 2022 recruiting cycle really starts to take off.
