Virginia Tech made a lot of noise on the recruiting trail today as four-star WR Shamarius Peterkin committed to the Hokies over North Carolina and NC State.
The 6’2’’ Winston-Salem, NC standout is the Hokies’ fourth WR commit this cycle joining four-star WR Micah Matthews, four-star WR Matthew Outten, and three-star WR Jayden Anderson. He’s also the sixth four-star WR to choose the Hokies in the past three recruiting cycles along with Chance Fitzgerald, Keylen Adams, Chanz Wiggins, Matthews, and Outten. He also said during his commitment that he will play football and basketball at Virginia Tech.
Peterkin held offers from Virginia Tech, NC State, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida State, Penn State, Tennessee, Louisville, Maryland, West Virginia, South Carolina, and more.
This may be the most impressive recruiting victory of the 2025 class to date by Virginia Tech going down to North Carolina and beating out NC State and UNC to land a blue-chip star who is a top 10 recruit in his home state. WRs coach Fontel Mines continues to deliver more major recruiting victories as he builds what is the most talented WR room we’ve ever seen at VT based on the recruiting rankings.
It’s easy to see why Peterkin is considered a big time prospect after being a big play machine as a junior with 42 catches for 824 yards and 12 touchdowns, averaging 19.6 yards per catch.
With Peterkin on board, the Hokies should be done with pure wide receivers out of high school. Three-star ATH Luke Stuewe is a name high on the radar among uncommitted recruits who the Hokies are trending for that can play WR, though he can also play defensive back which may be where he starts given the current makeup of the 2025 class. It would greatly surprise me if his spot is affected by Peterkin's commitment.
