On Tuesday afternoon, we learned that Virginia Tech RHP Griffin Stieg entered the transfer portal after spending three seasons at Virginia Tech. This was initially reported by D1Baseball and confirmed per source to me.
His most productive season came in 2024, where he started 13 games and pitched more than 50 innings with a 4.70 ERA. He tore his UCL late in the 2024 season, rendering him unavailable for the 2025 season.
He is also listed as a top 200 MLB draft prospect by at least one major talent evaluator, so it is possible that he will get drafted in the top ten rounds. I would assume he's just testing the waters prior to the draft in July.
Should he return, Stieg would have likely been in line to be part of the weekend starting pitching rotation for the team in 2026, given his past experience as Tech's Sunday starter in 2024.
Looking ahead to next season, Brett Renfrow is the obvious Friday guy for VT's starting pitching rotation. Nothing was set in stone behind him, though Stieg and Jake Marciano seemed like the potential top two candidates prior to their portal entries. Now, the focus likely shifts to Logan Eisenreich and Chase Swift for those two spots though Madden Clement will also be a candidate to start.
