Virginia Tech PG Rodney Rice Out For Charleston Classic

Basketball 1

The wait to see highly-regarded freshman PG Rodney Rice make his Virginia Tech debut continues as Jon Rothstein is reporting that Rice is out for the upcoming Charleston Classic.

Rice's injury absence for the Charleston Classic means that the earliest his debut might happen now is on the evening of Black Friday against Charleston Southern at home in Cassell Coliseum. It is encouraging to hear that Mike Young is hopeful about Rice returning for the Charleston Southern game for his 2022-23 season debut.

Rice's continued absence means that Sean Pedulla could break 35+ minutes at times in this upcoming tournament. Hunter Cattoor will likely run the point when Pedulla comes out of the game with MJ Collins being the top backup guard still for the Hokies.

Mike Young mentioned that part of why he is hoping for a Rice return soon is that Rice is Tech's backup point guard in addition to likely being the top overall backup guard for this team. Having Rice allows Cattoor to operate all of his minutes as a wing where he is best at in the eyes of Young rather than either have to spend a few minutes at the point or have Pedulla play 35+ minutes which is a few more than Young would like to regularly play Pedulla for.

We will have more as this story develops.
