Virginia Tech women's soccer improved to 2-0 on the season with a lopsided 6-0 win over VMI on Sunday evening at Thompson Field, getting goals from six different players just days after opening the year with a comeback win over Old Dominion.
The Hokies controlled the run of play from the opening whistle but had to wait until the closing stretch of the first half to break through. In the 34th minute, senior Anna Weir opened the scoring off a feed from Madi Boutot, giving Virginia Tech a 1-0 edge at the break. The Hokies already held a commanding 22-2 shot advantage through the opening 45 minutes, but Weir's goal was the only one they could find before halftime.
Any doubt about the outcome disappeared in a wild opening stretch to the second half. Just over a minute after the restart, Letizia Rossi doubled the lead in the 45th minute off an assist from Hannah Pachan, and Johannah Bradley made it 3-0 less than 30 seconds later. Ellie Robertson followed in the 48th minute to push the lead to 4-0, and Gabby Ciocca added a fifth goal in the 52nd minute to put the match away well before the hour mark. Eliana Salama closed out the scoring in the 75th minute, capping a night in which she led all players with 11 shots.
Virginia Tech finished with a staggering 43-3 advantage in shots and a 20-0 edge in shots on goal, while also winning the corner kick battle 12-0. Weir added six shots of her own to go with her goal, and Rossi, Ciocca and Robertson all chipped in with multiple shot attempts as the Hokies rotated pressure across the attack.
Virginia Tech split time in net between Julianna Trujillo and Savannah Sabo, with each playing a half and combining for the shutout without being forced into a single save. VMI got its best moments from goalkeeper Maren Ryberg, who made 10 saves across more than 72 minutes before giving way to Makena Corcoran, who turned away three more shots in relief. The Keydets were held to just three shots on the night, with Bailey Reid, Jordan Davis and Samantha Uschold each recording one.
The win moves Virginia Tech to 2-0 to open the season under 15th-year head coach Chugger Adair, building off Thursday's 2-1 comeback win over Old Dominion. VMI, meanwhile, drops to 0-2 as it continues a three-game road trip to open the year.
Virginia Tech stays home for its next match, hosting Liberty at Thompson Field on Thursday.
