Austin is the 12th transfer addition for the Hokies including the third offensive lineman from West Virginia, joining All-Big 12 G Tomas Rimac and freshman OL Kyle Altuner. He has four years of eligibility remaining after redshirting this past season.
Austin is a talented prospect who adds more depth at offensive tackle immediately with plenty of upside. He also could have a chance to start immediately, with both VT starting OTs gone. He’ll enter a battle with Johnny Garrett, Layth Ghannam, Hannes Hammer, and Aidan Lynch at minimum for those two starting tackle jobs.
As of now, I’d project Garrett and Ghannam as starting tackles, but every job outside of Rimac at one of the two guard spots feels open for the taking.
The addition of Austin likely doesn’t mean the Hokies are done on the offensive line nor should it given the lack of quality starting experience this unit has outside of Rimac.
We will have more as this story develops.
