The rumors continue to swirl around James Franklin as the potential next head football coach at Virginia Tech. Amidst those rumors, many have speculated about who would be included on a potential Franklin staff in Blacksburg.
So I decided to dive into the possibilities and see who could actually end up joining Franklin if he is the next head coach at VT. Here are my thoughts on what a potential Franklin VT staff could look like.
Offensive Coordinator
If Franklin gets the type of massive budget that many believe he may receive, then there's a wide range of options that Franklin can pursue for all sorts of roles on his staff.
One name that could be considered is current Akron head coach Joe Moorhead. Akron is one of the toughest jobs in FBS and while Moorhead hasn't had a winning season yet, he has shown yearly improvement with two wins in each of his first two seasons, four wins in year 3 (2024), and a 4-6 record this season with two winnable games left in Kent State and Bowling Green. If Moorhead wins those games, he would be taking Akron to only its fourth bowl game in program history.
Moorhead likely won't be fired by Akron but even if he holds onto his job, he could look to reset and return to Power 4 football as an offensive coordinator. Franklin and Moorhead won Franklin's lone Big 10 Championship together and Moorhead's offense did help Franlin elevate Penn State back to the upper echelon of the sport. Add in his previous coaching history in the region at places like Penn State and Fordham along with his proven track record as an OC, and it's easy to envision him receiving some serious consideration.
Moorhead isn't the only former Franklin OC who Franklin could pursue as
Why not Brent Pry? 🤷🏽♂️
