Khadim Sy had an up-and-down freshman season, but showed some flashes of great potential. Sy averaged 4 points and 2.7 rebounds in what was a solid debut for the young big man out of Oak Hill. Going into this season, Sy was expected to back up Kerry Blackshear. However, that won't be the case.

Khadim Sy has decided to leave Virginia Tech and has withdrawn from the university. Sy's decision is definitely a surprise as a move like this is usually limited to the offseason. The timing of this move also makes it a surprise given how there's very few options Sy has especially with him choosing to withdraw from Virginia Tech in full and not just leave the basketball program.
Sy's departure leaves the Hokies with Kerry Blackshear and former walk-on Nick Fullard as the only players 6'8'' or taller. Blackshear was projected to start anyway, but the Hokies will likely need him to play 30+ minutes per night given the lack of size. Fullard was awarded a scholarship this week, but his role is currently expected to be minimal at most.
The departure of Sy also means that the Hokies will likely use a lot of smaller lineups this season. Clips of Chris Clarke suggest that his recovery is going quite well and that he will be able to play this season. Meanwhile, the Hokies will need freshman PJ Horne to step up some especially with Ty Outlaw going down for the season. It wouldn't be surprising to see Buzz Williams use some lineups with Clarke or even Horne at the 5 at times along with a longer guard like Justin Bibbs at the 4.
