Seven Virginia Tech Rookies Make NFL Rosters

Greg Stroman 1
Virginia Tech had one of its largest group of players selected by NFL teams in the past decade this year with six Hokies selected in the 2018 NFL Draft and Supplemental Draft. Today, NFL teams made their final cuts with seven VT rookies making the cut including all six drafted Hokies plus one undrafted Hokie. The following seven Hokies made the cut for their respective teams as rookies: While it would have taken something historic for the Edmunds brothers (or any first round pick) to not make their team, it is impressive to see that all six Virginia Tech players selected in the 2018 NFL Draft and Supplemental Draft made their team's main roster. This comes a year after Bucky Hodges and Sam Rogers failed to make the 53-man rosters for their respective teams after being picked (though Hodges was cut slightly after the initial cut day). Brandon Facyson may be the biggest surprise as the undrafted free agent ended up signing with a Los Angeles Chargers team that had some depth at cornerback. However, Facyson saw that he could be a very good fit with Chargers DC Gus Bradley who had a liking for tall cornerbacks and has clearly benefited from being under his tutelage. Facyson clearly benefited from that and will have the opportunity to make his NFL debut next week. Washington spent three picks on former Virginia Tech players this offseason and it paid off with all three of them making the team. Greg Stroman and Adonis Alexander had the benefit of having former VT DBs coach Torrian Gray coaching their position, but both Stroman and Alexander put together strong preseasons at a position of need. Meanwhile, Tim Settle showed quickly why he will likely be involved in Washington's defensive line rotation this season and earned a spot on the roster. Wyatt Teller had a strong preseason with some wanting to see the fifth round pick get his chance with the Bills' first team offensive line. While Tremaine Edmunds and Teller will make their NFL debuts with the Bills next week, Cam Phillips was cut by Buffalo today though reports suggested that Phillips will likely land on the Bills' practice squad. Virginia Tech will have one of its largest group of NFL rookies in recent memory with seven former Hokies making 53-man rosters this season including all six of their draft picks, something that very few college programs are able to say.
